Improve your PC Security

www.malwarecity.com

You only have to pick up a newspaper or check out a news website to hear about the latest and greatest security threat. Malwarecity is a new site from the creators of BITDEFENDER, one of the numerous PC antivirus solutions available.

The site is aimed at providing information on the latest threats to PC security but is a little more “trendy” than others out there. The objective, of course, is so that you buy an antivirus application from Bitdefender but it does provide a useful resource and tells you about some of the latest security problems.

Overall we thought the site was OK but what we would really love is one of the Internet security companies to come up with an impartial site that lists all the products and all the solutions on the market. We know this is wishful thinking but they are all working towards the same goal – protecting your PC.

We’re giving the site two stars at the moment – Malwarecity is useful and can educate those people who know very little about PC security but more tools would really make this a great site – Go on Bitdefender – less sales and a bit more help and we’d love you.

Things to do on holiday

www.isango.com

If you like to travel but not sitting on a beach, going somewhere new can be a problem as you have no real idea what you can do when you get there. A fairly unknown site, Isango, hopes to solve this problem for all the jetsetters out there – it lets you search, and even book things to do whilst you are away.

Just to illustrate a simple example:

If you were travelling to California on holiday what would you do – Universal Studios? Rodeo Drive? Venice Beach? A simple search using the activities search engine throws up a few solutions:

  • Disneyworld
  • Seaworld
  • Shopping
  • Nights out

You can then follow the links and book the activity. Obviously Isango is making a profit on you pre booking but it is a really nice way to find out what is going on and actually give advice on what sort of people may like the activities.

The downside -

We’d actually like to see free things listed with the activities – What about a walk on Will Rodgers Beach or a advice on a nice resturant.

Overall we like the idea – a bit less heavy sell and more a place to stop by and I would be really happy to keeep coming back to the site – even better would be personal reviews of the activities and how they were rated – good, bad or indifferent.

I’d say Isango is a good three star site – the concept works for us and with a few more bits added I think this could be the next tripadvisor. If you have used the site please let us know in the comments section.

Social networks go shopping

www.jalebi.co.uk

Where ever you look on the web these days there are more and more social networks, connect to friends, show pictures, share ideas but we think this idea may take off – Social Shopping. People joining together to get a better deal.

We all know there are deals to be had on the high street particularly as the credit crunch is starting to hit. You can now go into some major retailers and ask “if I buy two what discount do I get” – well Jalebi takes this idea further. Get together with people on the net and buy together.

You could say that this is a very similar concept to things such as Pricedrop TV but in reality it is different – Jalebi is funded by profits from its motoring, travel and home insurance services – a proportion of which are donated to community projects, at home and abroad – an idea we really do like and hope to see more of in the future.

The online discounting has been branded “Powerdeals” which are free to all members – The power is once more back with the consumer. A great idea and one that we are pretty sure will catch on but we think the large social networks may pinch the idea fairly soon – we hope not.

On the downside we’re not sure about the name – is it catchy enough when there are so many sites around, possibly it’s just different.

Anyway a great idea – as it’s fairly new we are going to rate it as three star but we’d like to give it more – if any of our readers have used it let us know how it went through the comments section and if it is positive we will up rate it to four stars easily.

(With a star waiting to be issued)

Moving house – don’t forget this

www.iammoving.com

OK, a home moving site is probably not the best thing to be reviewing in todays economic climate but there are still people moving house and we think this site is great, even better it’s FREE.

Supported by the Royal Mail, iammoving.com lets you tell all those suppliers – gas, electric, post etc that you are moving.

It’s that simple really so heres how it works.

  1. Work out who supplies what to your house
  2. Get all your account details together
  3. Register at iammoving.com
  4. Select the service / organisation and complete the details requested

After that everything should be done for you – post gets redirected and no more messing with bills etc.

Our editor wishes the service was aviailable a few years ago – it would of saved loads of problems.

As the site is free to use and is such a handy tool we’re giving it a five star rating. If you have used the site please let us know by posting a comment.

Select read more to see the full details of the site.

Advice and support for addictions

www.trntv.co.uk

Firstly, we are not going to review this site just say what a good idea. A site that provides support and guidance for people with addictions.

It’s automatically a great site as it gives everyone who uses it the chance to hook up with people who have the same problems. Although we would like to see a bit of a simpler initial navigation format, having forums and blogs that provide an interactive approach to addiction management is a really good idea.

Below is the “about us” from the site – We think it is best to include this as it does explain things better than we ever could.

The Recovery Network is the first interactive television channel and internet portal in the UK to provide real time education and social assistance to anyone affected by addiction.

The Recovery Network will fill the gap in available support services and provide assistance on a 24-hour basis.

Please show your support for The Recovery Network – people with addictions often hide them from the people they love.

This site is unrated – not because it is bad, but because it is such a great idea.

Going Out in the North West

www.onionring.co.uk

The big question for everyone on a Friday and Saturday night is where shall we go to? But what is the best way to find somewhere do you work on a recommendation or just go and see.

Onionring was created as a way for people in the North West to find some of the best pubs, restaurants and bars that you may not of actually heard of unless you lived locally. It features an easy to use search facility that allows you to search by town, shows any special offers they may have and also if they have an online booking system.

Admittedly the adverts are paid for but don’t let this detract from the site – The team at whatsgoodontheweb are regular users. The downside – the reviews take a bit of time to find – you have to look at the venue before you can see them.

All in all if you are looking for a bar or restaurant it’s a great idea, and you never know the concept may just spread in the future to other areas. If you know of any similar guide sites please let us know. We will review them (especially as we like our grub).

As it is only for the North West we are giving the site two stars at the moment, add more areas and make the user reviews easier to find and this will definitely go up.
