Social networks go shopping
www.jalebi.co.uk
Where ever you look on the web these days there are more and more social networks, connect to friends, show pictures, share ideas but we think this idea may take off – Social Shopping. People joining together to get a better deal.
We all know there are deals to be had on the high street particularly as the credit crunch is starting to hit. You can now go into some major retailers and ask “if I buy two what discount do I get” – well Jalebi takes this idea further. Get together with people on the net and buy together.
You could say that this is a very similar concept to things such as Pricedrop TV but in reality it is different – Jalebi is funded by profits from its motoring, travel and home insurance services – a proportion of which are donated to community projects, at home and abroad – an idea we really do like and hope to see more of in the future.
The online discounting has been branded “Powerdeals” which are free to all members – The power is once more back with the consumer. A great idea and one that we are pretty sure will catch on but we think the large social networks may pinch the idea fairly soon – we hope not.
On the downside we’re not sure about the name – is it catchy enough when there are so many sites around, possibly it’s just different.
Anyway a great idea – as it’s fairly new we are going to rate it as three star but we’d like to give it more – if any of our readers have used it let us know how it went through the comments section and if it is positive we will up rate it to four stars easily.

What the company say about themselves please follow the link to read more.
Jalebi is a buying community. A place where people get together to get the things they want at the price they’re willing to pay. Of course, there have been buying communities in the past. But, the time wasn’t right.
The rise of social networking has shown the real power of the internet. It’s not just a huge on-line shopping mall or brochure. It allows us to communicate in new ways. We can easily build communities of interest, whether that’s keeping in touch with old friends, swapping our favourite music or negotiating the best deals with retailers. The web was always meant to be about give power to ordinary people like us. Then the large companies took over. It’s time we began to take it back. All we have to do is work together. At Jalebi, we’ve all come from that big company background. We know how businesses often treat their customers. We wanted to flip that relationship and put buying power in the hands of the communities where we live.

Ed. Thanks for the feedback. We chose the name Jalebi after a popular Indian sweet given out on celebratory ocassions. It’s quite ubiquitous – and is known by about 98% of all Indians GLOBALLY
.
Collective buying is so common in that part of the world, and we’re hoping it’s going to catch on here, the climate feels right. I’ll keep you in the loop with developments.
I used it to buy travel insurance and really liked the fact that i did not have to pay twice to ensure my jewelry, which is already covered by our home insurance. Nice one, and good experience overall.
