Reduce Your Energy Consumption

Winter is finally here and the cold and frost looks set to be on the ground for a while which will mean those heating bills are bound to go up so we thought we’d check out a new energy saving product on the market called Vphase and give a quick mention about their website, vphase.co.uk.

About Vphase
You’ve probably already seen a few adverts on TV for smart energy monitors but all they generally do is tell you what things are costing to run and, if you don’t change your energy habits, then your costs will be the same. Vphase is completely different, in a nutshell it reduces the voltage that your home runs on to a constant level of 220 volts rather than the normal 240 – 245 volts. This means that most electrical items in the house use less energy but how they perform is not altered.

The Vphase device has to be fitted by a qualified electrician but the makers claim that users can save anything from 10 – 15% on their annual energy costs. The cost of the unit is going to be around £250 plus installation which sounds a bit steep but based on a few quick sums an average household will save about £160 a year so it pays for itself in just two years.

In addition the vphase website (vphase.co.uk) also has lots of hints and tips on saving energy so even if you decide the cost is too high at the moment you can still change your habits and start saving money.

What We Think
Energy saving devices are going to become more and more popular over the next few years as costs begin to increase so we wouldn’t be surprised if one of the major electrical suppliers doesn’t start offering this as part of their service to the consumer. The device is well built and once installed doesn’t need maintenance it just gets on and does the job so for it’s green credentials we’re giving it a big thumbs up.

One For Coffee Drinkers

Reusable Coffee CupsOK, we’re going to admit straight away that this isn’t exactly a website review, more a product with a rather cool website. Called Keepcup.com they sell trendy thermos coffee mugs that you add your own personal touch to.

About The Website
Keepcup.com is aiming to reduce the number of paper cups thrown away each year in the UK by promoting reusable mugs that are designed to be both striking in colour and also environmentally friendly. Taking a look around their website you will see that there is lots of information on the environmental aspects of throw away cups from all those coffee shops on the high street but the really neat thing we like is the design your own function.

Basically if you want you can add your own flair to the mug by changing the colours – when you go through the design process you can select the size and then the colour for up to four parts of the mug (or just buy a ready designed one). The cost may seem a little bit high at £8.60 but many of the leading coffee bars now give a discount if you bring in your own mug so it rapidly pays for itself (and helps the environment).

What We Think
We liked the way the Keepcup.com website was clear and simple as well as offering the design your own service. It provides a green alternative to throw away cups and we’ve been assured that the mugs are well designed and of the highest quality.

Knowing what your children are up to online

There are a number of products on the market today that offer parents the ability to control young peoples web surfing by blocking undesirable sites, limiting time online and also ensuring that they do not connect with strangers through social networks.

We thought we’d do a quick review of one of the many products on the market at the moment after talking to a friend who had just set up her 13 year old daughter on Facebook and within 15 minutes she had over 130 friend requests, many from random strangers who she did not know.

Cyber Patrol is a neat little software application that lets parents monitor web surfing at home. It contains many of the features and functions you would expect from this type of application including content filtering, limiting programme access and limiting time that can be spent online.

The CyberPatrol Parental Controls application we looked at costs $39.95 and this can be installed on up to three PC’s and laptops at home, it is available to download from their website or from Amazon and they do offer a free trial so you can check out if the product is right for you and your family.

Website Review – Bullguard Antivirus

Free antivirus softwareNearly every day you pick up a newspaper and there is a story about online identity theft or hacking and for many computer users they still have not secured their computer and personal data against security threats so when we were told about free antivirus software from Bullguard.com we thought we should put together a quick review of their website and software for our readers.

About The Website
Bullguard was formed in 2002 as the number of broadband users increased across the World to create a single application that would protect Internet users from threats such as viruses, malware and hackers. Since then their application has become one of the most popular antivirus programmes on the market with over 3 million users as it is simple to install and easy for anyone to configure no matter what their technical competence. One thing that we especially like from Bullguard.com is that they offer free antivirus software to trial which is very important when you are looking at securing your commuter.

For many people their IT security generally stops at their home PC but many hackers are now targeting smartphone users so it may be worth taking a look at the Mobile Anti-virus Software they have also developed for phones using the Symbian operating system.

What We Think
We actually quite liked the Bullguard website as it was clear what the had to offer and they don’t try to use confusing jargon and fear to get you to use their software. They have some very good guides on everything from cybercrime to removing a virus so even if you’ve already got an anti-virus programme running it may well be worth looking at their website so you know what to look out for.

Please take a few minutes to look at their website as the information may come in very useful so here is a link to their page on Cybercrime as a starting point.

Every parent knows that your young addition to the family can cause all sorts of mess from toys to books so we’ve been asked to take a quick look at BigBookLittleBookCardboardBox which is a neat storage solution for keeping all those books in one place.

BigBookLittleBookCardboardBox sells just one product, a neatly designed cardboard box that allows parents to store away books of all shapes and sizes in a diplay type setting. The books can be easily flicked through when you are trying to find something and whats more keeps the house nice and tidy at the same time.

What We Think

We’d suggest that if you are looking for something to store all those childrens books take a look at BigBookLittleBookCardboardBox, for £8 it’s a neat idea …. literally.

Custom Bikes Without the Cost

For most people cycling is a summer pursuit aimed at getting a bit of extra exercise without pushing themselves too hard. The problem is that for most of us we do not want a super expensive bike that costs thousands of pounds just something that is functional and will get us from A to B without breaking and not costing the earth. That’s why when What’sGoodOnTheWeb heard about MyVelo we thought we’d give it a quick review.

About the Site
MyVelo aims to get custom bikes to people without the hassle of oversell, they don’t offer top of the range mountain bikes just simple, practical bikes that can be used for leisure or getting to work and back. As a customer you can select the colour you want your frame, handlebars or seat to be but won’t be asked what style brakes and gears because for most of us we just don’t want that.

Set up by a bunch of guys that understand what most people are looking for when they go to buy a bike your custom bike can be picked up from the MyVelo store or delivered to your home for just £375. The bikes are functional and are great for riding in your local park or just getting to work.

What we think
We think MyVelo will be very successful, they don’t try to oversell and they give you the ability to get a custom bike at the fraction of the cost of putting one together yourself. The website itself is very clear and easy to use and there are no hidden extras. In addition you can take advantage of the government Cycle to Work Scheme and can save significantly on the cost of your bike.
